Interview for The Medicine Maker
A popular edition The Medicine Maker has published theinterview A Soluble Solution for Drug Delivery with ZIOC researchers who discuss the efficacy of ionic liquid applications in pharmaceutics.
The interest of The Medicine Maker to ionic liquids originated from the ZIOC research communicated in the paper "Cytotoxic activity of salicylic acid-containing drug models with ionic and covalent binding" published in Medicinal Chemistry Letters of the American Chemical Society. It describes the use of salicylic acid, a known anti-inflammatory agent, as a drug model. Salicylic acid molecules had been incorporated into ionic liquids and solubility and biological activity in respect of human fibroblasts and colorectal adenocarcinoma cells were studied. Salicylic acid retained its activity in the ionic liquid and exhibited higher solubility in water as compared to pure salicylic acid. The research proves that ionic-liquid drugs with “dual action” show promise in combined therapy.
