Results of the research by scientists from ZIOC RAS are featured on the cover of prestigious journal
The research carried out in laboratory № 13 of Zelinsky Institute in collaboration with colleagues from the National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (Thailand) and the Macau University of Science and Technology (China), is featured on the cover of the top-rated international journal ChemMedChem. The research is devoted to finding new anticancer compounds for the treatment of hepatocarcinoma.
Liver cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer and is the third leading cause of death from cancer worldwide. The available range of traditional therapies based on chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation therapy are limited by low drug efficacy, high toxicity, and possible drug resistance.
Researchers from Zelinsky Institute in collaboration with foreign colleagues have developed promising compounds based on cyclic peroxides to fight against cancer cells with multidrug resistance, which is caused by overexpression of transmembrane ATP-binding proteins (ATP-binding cassette transporters) in them. Overexpression of such proteins leads to a decrease in the concentration of the drug in the cancer cell, which reduces the effectiveness of drugs. Multiple drug resistance is a serious problem that hinders the success of cancer chemotherapy. Synthetic peroxides show high cytotoxicity and selectivity against liver cancer cells. They promote their apoptosis and have an inhibitory effect on the transmembrane protein P-glycoprotein (P-glycoprotein / ABCB5) from the family of transmembrane ATP-binding proteins.
