A selective synthesis of unsymmetrical gem-bisperoxides using ozone and hydroperoxides was developed at the ZIOC

Due to its high oxidizing power, ozone has a wide range of applications, from air and wastewater purification from microorganisms to paper bleaching and fumigation of crops. Ozonolysis is widely used in both scientific research and industrial synthesis to cleave unsaturated carbon-carbon bonds under mild conditions.

Despite this, the synthetic potential of alkene ozonolysis remains rather limited and rarely goes beyond the production of carbonyl or carboxyl compounds. Recent work by the researchers of the Laboratory for the Study of Homolytic Reactions of the Zelinsky Institute has expanded the possibilities of this reaction: it has been shown that the classical route of ozonolysis of alkenes can be unexpectedly changed by the combined use of ozone with a second oxidizing agent, hydroperoxide, opening access to unsymmetrical gem-bisperoxides. Previously, the selective synthesis of such structures was not possible.
